Movesets
( Look up any words you don't know in the Battle Dictionary)

Choice Scarf Lead

Moves
How to obtain
1) Eruption Level 57
2) Overheat TM50
3) Hidden Power Grass/Ice
TM10  and the right IVs
4) Focus Punch TM01
Trait: Blaze Nature: Mild (+SAtk - Def)
Item: Choice Scarf EVs: 120 Atk / 252 SAtk / 136 Spd

Strategy:

Eruption is a great addition to Typhlosion's fire arsenal and makes this a great moveset. With Choice Scarf, Typhlosion has the speed to attack before most opponents and hit them with a 100% accurate, 150 power Fire move. That's like using a Blast Burn that doesn't need recharging! Even if you take some damage from Stealth Rock or Spikes, Eruption will still be stronger than Flamethrower.

However, Typhlosion is still a frail Pokemon and eventually your HP will drop to the point where Eruption becomes weak and useless. This is where its second Fire attack comes in - Overheat. It's nearly as strong as Eruption and if you are below 1/3rd health, it will be even more powerful because of the boost from your Blaze ability.

If you want to stand a chance against Water or Dragon opponents, a good Hidden Power is very important. Hidden Power Grass is for Water types and is especially effective against Swampert. Ice is for Dragon types like Salamence or Garchomp.
And since Typhlosion is a special sweeper, it will obviously get walled by Blissey. Fortunately, Typhlosion has strong arms and can hit her with a powerful Focus Punch. It's also a good attack for taking out Rock types like Tyranitar.

Mild is the preffered nature for this set, though Naughty (+SAtk, -SDef) can also work. Both natures focus on Typhlosion's Special Attack without sacrificing its physical Attack, which it needs for Focus Punch. Max Speed isn't needed since you have Choice Scarf, but its important to reach at least 270 Speed. This allows you to outrun Heracross, who is one of the most common Choice Scarf users out there. Put the rest of your EVs into Attack. This gives you just enough physical power to guarantee a 2HKO on Blissey with Focus Punch.

Choice Specs

Moves
How to obtain
1) Overheat TM50
2) Focus Punch TM01
3) Hidden Power Grass/Ice
TM10  and the right IVs
4) Flamethrower
OR
Fire Blast

Level 42/TM 35

TM38
Trait: Blaze Nature: Timid (+Spd, - Atk)
Item: Choice Specs EVs: 6 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd

Strategy:

This set seems similar to the previous one, except you're using Choice Specs instead of Choice Scarf. This time, Overheat is your main attack since a Choice set is all about doing big damage. The Special Attack lowering side effect of Overheat doesn't matter since you'll most likely be switching in and out anyways. Again, you'll want Focus Punch to get past Blissey and a Hidden Power for your choice of either Waters or Dragons.

Put your EVs into Special Attack and Speed, and give it a Timid nature to maximize its Speed. Don't worry about Attack since Focus Punch will still be able to put a big dent in Blissey.

SubPetaya Sweeper

Moves
How to obtain
1) Flamethrower Level 60/TM 35
2) Hidden Power Grass/Ice
TM10  and the right IVs
3) Sunny Day TM11

4) Substitute

TM90, Fire Red/Leaf Green/Emerald Tutor
Trait: Blaze Nature: Timid (+Spd, - Atk)
Item: Petaya Berry EVs: 6 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd

Strategy:

This set is all about maximizing Typhlosion's fire power. Flamethrower is a given on this blazing beast. Hidden Power Grass hurts Swampert and Rhyperior for some major damage, although it may not OHKO them unless you use your Petaya Berry. You can also use Hidden Power Ice to hit Salamence, Garchomp, and other Dragons. Sunny Day boosts your Flamethrower's power while protecting you from Water attacks. Its effect will be of even greater help, as mentioned below.

Substitute protects you from status and ensures that you will get the Special Attack boost from Petaya Berry when your health drops low enough. What's even more cool is that Blaze will also activate around the time Petaya Berry comes into effect. With Sunny Day, Blaze, and a Petaya Berry, as well as getting STAB from Fire attacks, you will increase your Flamethrower's power by an incredible 200%!

Sunny Day

Moves
How to obtain
1) Flamethrower
OR
Fire Blast
Level 42/TM 35

TM38
2) Solarbeam
TM22
3) Sunny Day TM11

4) Hidden Power Ice

TM10  and the right IVs
Trait: Blaze Nature: Timid (+Spd, - Atk)
Item: Life Orb/Heat Rock EVs: 6 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd

Strategy:

Diamond/Pearl gave Typhlosion the ability to learn Solarbeam, so a Sunny Day set can also work. You're better off using this in UU battles because if you use it in OU, you'll have to contend with Sandstream from Hippowdon and Tyranitar messing up your Sunny Day.
For an item, choose Life Orb for a power boost or Heat Rock if you want to keep the sun around for a longer period.

Other options: Earthquake (TM26), Howl (breed with Houndour, Poochyena, Whismur, or Electrike), Lava Plume (Level 35), Will-o-wisp (TM61), Hidden Power Electric (TM10), Focus Blast (TM52)

Besides Focus Punch, Earthquake is Typhlosion's only other useful physical move and allows it to take on enemy Fire types more easily. Other than that, Typhlosion shouldn't be using physical attacks. Its Attack stat isn't very high and though it can be boosted with Howl, you're still better off using special attacks.

On the special side, you have Lava Plume. This Fire attack isn't as strong as Flamethrower or Fire Blast, but it has a high chance of Burn and can be good for crippling physical opponents like Tyranitar or Swampert. Of course, you can also use Will-o-wisp to inflict a Burn.
Hidden Power Electric is an option that is geared specifically for Gyarados, and its still effective against other Water types. If you're using Typhlosion outside of OU, you can use Focus Blast instead of Focus Punch if you don't mind its low accuracy. Without Blissey to worry about, special attacks become much more effective.

How to counter Typhlosion:

Countering Typhlosion basically depends on what Hidden Power it chooses. If it goes with Grass, Dragon types can defeat it with no problem. If it chooses Ice, Water types dispose of it with ease. Kingdra counters it no matter what Hidden Power it has since its not weak to either Ice or Grass. The same is true for Gyarados. Milotic, while weak to Hidden Power Grass, has high Sp. Defense and Recover so it can last for a long time.

Heatran and Houndoom pack a nice immunity to Fire and resistance to Ice and Grass. And Blissey can obviously handle it with no problem. Be careful of Focus Punch though, since all three are weak to it.

The Sunny Day set may give some Water Pokemon problems since it cancels out Typhlosion's Water weakness and lets it unleash a powerful Solarbeam. But if it's used in OU, Tyranitar can stop it simply by switching in and replacing Sunny Day with its Sandstream. Tyranitar's Sp. Defense is boosted in the sandstorm so even a Solarbeam won't OHKO.

In the lower tiers, Charizard is an excellent counter since it resists just about all its attacks and can use the oppurtunity to set up with Belly Drum or Swords Dance. Grumpig and Snorlax with Thick Fat can take hits from it pretty well. Snorlax is weak to Focus Punch/Focus Blast, but can OHKO with Earthquake.
